As a successor to Mitsubishi’s Starion 2+2, Mitsubishi delivered with the 3000, which was marketed to Dodge as the Stealth, which could use a competitor in the ponycar field against the Camaro, Mustang, Capri and Firebird. This is a beautiful, low-mileage surviving example.
Made in June 1991 in Mitsubishi’s Nagoya, Japan factory, this version is the non-turbocharged model. Dressed in Firestorm Red (code R38), the car’s paint and trim are in overall very good order, though there are some blemishes evident in the rubber trim along the tops of the door, particularly on the passenger side. The bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is extremely tidy, the cargo area is in very good order, the battery has a January 2018 sticker and the body-colored bumpers fit tightly to the body.
This car is one of 19,696 Stealths exported to the US in 1992; one of 5,247 non-turbo R/T models and one of 1,534 Stealths made in this color. A previous owner, a Richard K. in Blasdell, New York, bought it on December 1, 2002. Maintenance notes show that the car received all new fluids on November 17, 2002, at 40,008 miles and a lube, oil and filter on June 22, 2003 at 41,062 miles.
This 2+2 rolls on Valera Sport All-Season radials, size 225/35ZR18 at every corner. Each tire is mounted to a factory alloy wheel. The wheels and tires are all in very good order. Safety equipment includes a driver’s side airbag and anti-lock brakes.
Under the hood is a 3.0L DOHC, 24-valve V-6 (code 6G72). Note that this is the non-turbocharged version of the engine. Backing the motor is a five-speed manual transmission (code F5M33). Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, cruise control, power locks and power windows. There are also foglights, a rear window defroster and a rear window washer/wiper.
Inside, the car’s gray leather seats are in very good overall condition, as is the matching carpet and headliner. A four-spoke steering wheel bearing an airbag faces the driver. The gray instrument panel and inner door panels are in similar order. A/C blows cold, but not cold. The center console and shift lever look good and there’s a factory AM/FM stereo with a cassette deck to round out the inside.
The Z11A chassis code was used for the base Dodge Stealth. The Mitsubishis lacked the “twin turbo” writing on the faux windows. The Dodges had different bumpers than the turbo cars, otherwise, the non-turbo cars looked cosmetically like the turbo cars. These models were front-wheel drive and lacked four-wheel steering and active aero. They came with a five-speed manual (F5M33) or with automatic transmissions. Both the DOHC and SOHC (6G72) V-6s were offered in this platform.
The Mitsubishi GTO is a front-engine, all-wheel/front-wheel drive grand touring/sports car manufactured and marketed by Mitsubishi from 1990-2000 over a single generation. Manufactured in a three-door hatchback coupé body style in Nagoya, Japan, the 2+2 four-seaters were marketed in the Japanese domestic market (JDM) as the GTO, and globally as Mitsubishi 3000GT. In North America, it was sold both as the Mitsubishi 3000GT (1991–1999) and the Dodge Stealth (1991–1996), a badge engineered, mechanically identical captive import. As a collaborative effort between Chrysler and Mitsubishi Motors, Chrysler was responsible for the Stealth's exterior styling.
Early models were internally designated Z16A and incorporated full-time four-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, active aerodynamics with automatically adjusting front and rear spoilers, sport/tour exhaust modes and electronically controlled suspension (ECS). The GTO, 3000GT and Stealth featured pop-up headlights and articulated blister caps on the hood to accommodate the ECS controllers at the top of the strut turrets. The Dodge Stealth featured a signature cross-hair front bumper fascia and crescent-shaped rear spoiler — and did not include active aerodynamics.
In 1993, the engine went to a four-bolt main and a forged crankshaft, some of the early models in 1993 still received the cast crank present in the first years. In the U.S., both the 1991 to 1993 Dodge Stealth R/T Turbo and Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 received the transversely mounted 24-valve V-6 paired with a long ratio five-speed manual. The base model Stealth was the only model to feature crank windows and without the sunroof, it weighted at 3075 pounds. All the other models received electronic windows (automatic on the driver side). Automatic climate control was standard on all turbo models. The Stealth turbo weights 3800 pounds compared to the 3814 pounds of the VR-4. The non turbo 3000gt (with sunroof) weights 3373 pounds and 3200 without the sunroof. Electronically adjustable leather seats were standard on all US VR-4 while the GTO in Japan were offered with slightly lighter cloth seats.
Competition to this Stealth in 1992 included Chevrolet’s Camaro, Dodge’s own Daytona, Ford’s Mustang, Honda’s Prelude, Mazda’s RX-7, Mitsubishi’s 3000GT, Nissan 300ZX 2+2, Pontiac’s Firebird and Toyota’s Supra.
If you remember driving one of these when you were in high school and/or college – before marriage, before the house, before the kids – and you want another one, you should stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars to check out this low-mileage example before someone else drives it home.
